A first home is more than just a property; it is a milestone of ownership and a canvas for deeply personal storytelling. For Aashi Ashok Shah, founder of COZY PLAN, her project KOYOI HOUSE in Thane was exactly that, a vibrant, 600 sq. ft. sanctuary designed for a growing family of four. Completed in 2025, the residence stands as a testament to the idea that design constraints are often the best catalysts for creativity.
Designing Through Constraints
The project’s primary challenge was two-fold: a modest budget and a structural landscape interrupted by numerous columns and beams. Rather than letting these limits dilute her vision, Shah embraced them as architectural features.
"Rather than allowing financial limits to dilute the vision, the approach focused on strategic interventions, statement wallpapers, expressive headboards, and a confident color palette that brought depth without excess."-Aashi Ashok Shah
The Sage Green Living Room
The heart of the home is a tropical-inspired living area. A calming sage green palette sets the tone, layered with botanical wallpaper that reflects natural light to create a soft, welcoming atmosphere.
Multifunctional Design: To accommodate a growing family, a sofa-cum-bed was integrated to transform the space into a sleeping area at night without compromising the day-time aesthetic.
Architectural Fluidity: Structural columns were absorbed into the design, appearing intentional rather than intrusive.
Visual Continuity: This sage theme extends into the connecting passage, punctuated by understated hanging lights that provide warmth.
The Master Suite: An Architectural Arch
In the master bedroom, the design team faced a fixed, centrally positioned window that limited conventional layouts. With minimal civil modifications allowed, the solution was found in architectural layering.
A large, custom arch was constructed behind the bed, framing the window as a focal feature while subtly integrating existing columns. This arch motif is mirrored in the wardrobe detailing, creating a cohesive, rhythmic language throughout the room. Textured beige walls and ample daylight maintain an airy, serene character.
Whimsical Details in the Daughter's Room
The daughter’s bedroom shifts the palette to soft blues and natural wood. Blue floral wallpaper is paired with a complementary upholstered headboard, while curved mirrors and rounded edges are used to soften the room’s geometry, lending a sense of balance and fluidity.
KOYOI HOUSE demonstrates that an expressive, composed home doesn't require an unlimited budget, it requires vision. As Aashi Ashok Shah’s first professional project following her own home, it represents a vibrant first chapter shaped by adaptability and heart. Fact File
