In an architectural landscape often dominated by cold, sterile minimalism, a striking counter-narrative has emerged in Pune. Saanjh, a 1,350-square-foot residential interior designed by Kushagra Tyagi of the firm Purru, is a deliberate, tactile celebration of modern Indian living. The home beautifully bypasses stark, clinical aesthetics, leaning instead into an intentional structural vibrancy where color, craft, and texture are restored to their rightful place.


Public Quarters: A Dialogue of Texture and Craft

The home's public core operates as a fluid dialogue between open spatial planning and cozy domestic corners. Upon crossing the threshold, the public zone transitions into an expansive, light-filled living area where the layout uses fluid pathways while establishing distinct, intimate conversational zones.

The seating cluster is layered with an eclectic mix of pattern and print, vibrant turquoise, sunny yellow, and detailed floral-embroidered cushions rest comfortably alongside handwoven fabrics.

Every design decision reflects an invisible thread of precise styling. A solid wood credenza acts as a base for custom ceramic lamps and an artisanal green mantel clock, while a delicate tree mural climbs gracefully up the plasterwork.

Centering the large, traditional patterned rug is a sculptural, live-edge wood coffee table that introduces an organic rhythm to the space, topped with a blue textile runner and a single white bowl filled with fresh red petals. Across the room, a cane-backed settee sits under a vintage crystal chandelier, framed by custom Ritu Kumar Chintz drapes that soften the natural light and introduce historical textile mastery directly into everyday domestic life.

The Balcony Alcove: Transitioning to the outdoor terrace through large sliding glass panels, the apartment creates a serene alfresco escape. Patterned encaustic floor tiles provide a graphic foundation for a contemporary gray rope armchair with an embroidered cushion. A hand-carved, distressed hot-pink mirror frame stands out boldly against a heavily textured mustard-yellow wall, enveloped by cascading greenery, potted monstera plants, and fresh purple flowers.

The Children’s Room: Moving into the private chambers, the design pivots to a youthful yet highly sophisticated register that transcends generic design norms. A breathtaking, hand-painted botanical accent wall features tropical palms and blossoming boughs on a dusty pink background. It is balanced by an energetic yellow daybed with a teal throw and custom, floor-to-ceiling sliding wardrobe doors in tiffany blue with woven cane inserts within geometric arched panels.

The Master and Guest Suites: Nuanced Intimacy

The private suites handle pattern execution with masterful precision, substituting overt traditional cues for a more nuanced play of print and artisan craftsmanship.

In the master bedroom, the narrative shifts to a bolder expression of cultural memory. A stately four-poster teak bed takes center stage against wallpaper adorned with historic block-printed motifs. A vibrant, deep magenta overlay brings an immediate opulence to the room, anchored by a beautifully detailed painting that connects the space to traditional Indian artistry. The sliding wardrobe doors continue this thoughtful material narrative, utilizing matching patterned fabric inserts embedded within rich timber frames.

The guest bedroom handles pattern with serene restraint. A rhythmic, block-printed leaf motif wallpaper spans the walls, providing a sophisticated backdrop for a handcrafted teak wood bed with a detailed fabric-paneled headboard. The bed is dressed with a soft, quilted peach-and-white counterpane, contrasted by vibrant turquoise accent pillows featuring traditional floral patterns, while a brass Moroccan-style lantern hangs suspended nearby, casting diffused light throughout the space.

Through its careful curation of handcrafted objects, tactile fabrics, and custom art installations, Saanjh demonstrates how heritage can converse effortlessly with modern functional programming, resulting in a home that is evocative, soulful, and profoundly human.
