Mellow Cafe: Spatial Rigor Meets Contemporary Modernity in 27 Square Meters

In contemporary commercial architecture, scale is no longer the defining metric of spatial impact. Tucked into the urban fabric of Mulhouse, France, Mellow Cafe, a takeaway coffee bar concept conceived by Wrong Door Studio, presents a masterclass in spatial efficiency, industrial materiality, and atmospheric lighting. Spanning a compact interior footprint of just 27 square meters alongside a 4-square-meter exterior terrace, the project demonstrates how deliberate geometry and refined material contrasts can transform strict dimensional constraints into an unforgettable spatial identity.

Site Context & The Transformation

The starting point of the project was a raw, compartmentalized commercial shell featuring existing structural columns, glass block windows, and traditional wall moldings

Wrong Door Studio completely stripped back these legacy elements to create a clean visual slate, re-engineering the tight layout through detailed precise site measurements.

Architectural Concept & Urban Facade

Designed around three core pillars - technology, modern lifestyle, and accessible luxury, Mellow Cafe bypasses decorative embellishments in favor of pure architectural expression. Rather than masking its compact dimensions, the layout designed by principal architect Kseniya Popova harnesses them to deliver a seamless customer flow.

From the street level, the storefront communicates an immediate street-style identity. The facade is clad in micro-square gridded tiles framed by sleek brushed steel trim. An integrated ice-blue seating bench extends outside beneath a minimal illuminated box sign, while subtle graphic floor markings on the sidewalk intuitively direct incoming visitors toward the doorway.

Material Palette: Refined Industrialism

The design language relies on a sharp material palette that juxtaposes utilitarian textures with fluid, reflective surfaces.

Four abstract panels: white textured, pale blue gradient, shiny silver ripples, and gray grid pattern.

Distorted Mirror Stainless Steel: Anchoring the interior, the central service bar features a dynamic, undulating mirrored front. It catches ambient reflections and movement throughout the day, instantly making the counter the visual heart of the café.

Brushed Stainless Steel & Powder-Coated Mesh: Worksurfaces, open display shelving, and back-bar grid panels utilize structured metals to provide a crisp, architectural contrast to the fluid counter.

Industrial Diamond Plate: Used across dedicated specialty stations, such as the matcha display corner, diamond plate metal adds a subtle tactile, industrial texture.

Minimalist showroom with patterned silver counter, small jars and metal tins, and a blue hanging speaker against a gray wall.

Decorative Plaster & Concrete: Neutral plaster walls and seamless terrazzo-style floors establish a soft canvas that amplifies natural and artificial light.

Ice Blue Accents: A signature muted ice-blue hue appears across suspended speaker blocks, outdoor seating, and floor graphics, injecting a contemporary energy into the neutral background.

Sculpting with Light & Digital Integration

Light acts as a primary architectural material rather than a simple functional add-on. Overhead, an open Grilyato super chrome grid ceiling unifies the entire floor area while housing a multi-layered lighting strategy:

Sunken illumination panels fill the space with a uniform, shadow-softening ambient glow. Suspended geometric light and audio blocks anchored by industrial chains create playful architectural points of interest above the counter line.

Eliminating physical wall clutter, the drink menu is projected directly onto the smooth plaster wall above the POS terminal. This modern digital touch maintains a clean silhouette while enhancing guest experience.
